The History of SCARCE-LY Used Books and Records
From the very beginning, SCARCE-LY Used Books and Records was a labor of love. We first opened in 2017 when two volunteers, Jim and Susan Marshall, took it on as a project to find an outlet for our donated books that didn’t fit with the schools and other nonprofits we work with. In addition to piles of books, we also had an unusually large assortment of records that had been donated over the years. Full of enthusiasm and talent—Jim, as a musician, music buff, and storyteller, and Susan, as the former Executive Director of the Woodridge Public Library—they got to work.
The first “store” was a 20 foot by 20 foot square in our old warehouse. Even though space was cramped, lighting was poor and the roof leaked, Jim and Susan developed a regular customer base (and frankly a fan base!). In our new space our SCARCE-LY Used Books & Records has 50 feet of floor to ceiling windows and roughly 1700 square feet. Even during the pandemic SCARCE-LY Used grew its customer base and helped support our increased rent.
