On June 5th, awards were presented to the winners of the 12th annual Sustainable Design Challenge.  Winners were honored at the monthly DuPage County Stormwater Committee meeting and presented with cash award checks thanks to our business sponsors: Wight & Company, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Hey and Associates, and Conservation Design Forum. These local high school students showed exceptional research and innovation in the sustainable building projects they created.

Overall LEED Design Award: Siva Sreedhar and Cate Ayers, York Community High School

Best Stormwater Design: Annalise Soldano, Francesca Soldano, Mollie Grasse, and Bridget Tully of York Community High School

Best Energy Efficiency Design: Emily Greetis and Lina Gebhardt of Glenbard East High School

Sponsored by DuPage County Stormwater Management, SCARCE coordinates the annual event, which encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices. Local professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields served as judges during the event, evaluating the students’ designs, presentations and innovation.

The 12th annual Sustainable Design Challenge took place on April 17, where nearly 30 student groups presented models of their designs and explained the design elements that made their building sustainable. These elements included renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, and water conservation elements such as native plant landscaping, rain barrels and other green infrastructure for stormwater management.

DuPage County high school teachers and their students are encouraged to get involved in this fantastic extracurricular STEAM  education opportunity. To learn more, visit www.scarce.org/sustainable-design or contact [email protected]
