Overall LEED Design & $500 prize: Team 40 York HS: Gavin Vandenberg & Jack Chlystek

The 10th annual High School Sustainable Design Challenge was a huge success.  145 students participated, forming 40 groups, from five high schools; Addison Trail HS, Glenbard East HS, Hinsdale Central HS, Wheaton Warrenville South HS and York HS.

Students created sustainable buildings for a panel of judges and public viewing.

Students also toured the new Community Center, bringing two missions together; health, wellness and security along with the environmental mission.  The Center’s environmental initiatives focus on reducing their carbon footprint, conserving resources, reducing pollution, managing storm water on site and more.

Participants of the Design Challenge also had the chance to see the County’s environmental initiatives throughout DuPage County’s campus including the car charging station, solar roof, green roof, reflective roof and restored wetland.  It was a day of sharing and learning for these high school students.

A very special thank you to the companies who judged, gave tours, sponsored the event, and hosted green career booths including:

  • Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd
  • Sebert Landscape
  • Wight & Company

Thank you to Compost Supply for making our event waste-free by composting all food scraps, plates and napkins.

On the right: DuPage County staff member, Tom Kuhn shows students the green roof, solar roof and reflective roof and restored wetland.
