SCARCE Aids in Hurricane Relief

The United States has had a very eventful hurricane season, to say the least. Recovery efforts in Houston and Puerto Rico have a long way to go and many Americans are looking for ways to lend their support. Here at SCARCE we look to contribute to relief efforts with what we do best: provide books, schools supplies, and more to children and schools in need.

Due to our limited resources, we are always looking for partners that can transport items from SCARCE to relief zones. We were very pleased and excited to work with the following organizations so that we could contribute to relief efforts.  Many thanks to The David Agency Insurance Inc and the Puerto Rican Cultural Association of Chicago.

Hurricane Harvey Relief

After Hurricane Harvey walloped Houston SCARCE found a local relief effort organized by The David Insurance Agency in Elmhurst. SCARCE put a call out to staff, volunteers, and friends to bring us any personal care items, clothes and toys – not items we typically collect. We organized and filled 8 boxes through our brief collection and staff brought them to the agency’s location in Elmhurst. Thank you The David Agency for providing a resource for residents and organizations to support hurricane victims! SCARCE hopes to provide relief to children and schools with needed books and supplies as the recovery effort continues. If you know of an organization working to send relief supplies to schools in need in the Houston area, please contact us.

Aid to Puerto Rico

Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, SCARCE sought an organization to partner with to send supplies to Puerto Rico. We connected with the Puerto Rican Cultural Association of Chicago (PRCAC) to determine what supplies were needed. SCARCE staff worked with Diana Padilla, of PRCAC, to determine how much and what items to donate. Staff and volunteers spent a full day sorting and packing fifty boxes of Spanish and English textbooks, board games, crayons, notebooks, and over 400 backpacks from Domtar to donate to the people of Puerto Rico. PRCAC picked up the boxes and is working with Grace and Peace Community Church and Puerto Rico Rises to store, ship, and even distribute supplies directly to people in need on the island, including in many of the smaller “forgotten” cities. A big Thank you to Diana, the Puerto Rican Cultural Association, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church, and Puerto Rico Rises for helping SCARCE support hurricane victims. We’d also like to highlight and thank the SCARCE volunteers that helped organize and pack SCARCE’s donations: Dawn, Dianne, Marilyn, Tip, Mary, Patty, Bev, and Mary Lynn.

You Can Help the Work Continue!

Please help us continue to provide relief supplies to areas affected by natural disasters by making a monetary donation to SCARCE. When you make a financial contribution to SCARCE, you are helping to create a brighter future for people and the planet. SCARCE is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and all donations are tax deductible to the extent the law allows.

If you know of an organization collecting and transporting supplies for relief efforts for any natural disaster, please let us know! We would love to connect and do our part by providing books, school supplies, or medical equipment.
