Film Festival Details

SCARCE is holding a world language film festival, Focus on Energy, at the Studio Movie Grill in Wheaton on April 23, 2017. High school and college students have entered short videos about the smart grid and energy efficiency to reach those who speak in languages other than English. Over 60 languages are spoken in DuPage County and we would love to reach everyone! This is meant to be a challenging, competitive, interdisciplinary learning experience that will encourage creativity and cultural awareness while exploring the human side of technology.

So why is the smart grid so important? It allows for:

More efficient and reliable transmission of electricity to your home, requiring fewer power plants,
Real-time 2-way information to help you shave peak electrical demand to reduce overall electrical rates, and to save money when participating in pricing programs (for example, see https://hourlypricing.comed.com/live-prices/),
Tracking of energy use online by month, day, and hour,
Automatic outage alerts; no need to call your electric company,
Better integration of solar and wind power into the grid,
Faster recovery of electrical service after storms and other events, and
Reducing our carbon footprints.

Registered teams attended workshops to receive professional videography instruction as well as technical instructions to use the equipment. Teams learned about Smart Meters and the Smart Grid. Submitted videos are being reviewed by a professional translation company and will be submitted to a panel of judges for review. Each video will be judged in categories for High School, College, and People’s Choice (based on social media interaction). All videos will be shown at the Film Festival on April 23rd at the Studio Movie Grill in Wheaton. Winners will be announced then as well.

Prize Distribution:

Best High School Film = $1000 per team member not to exceed $5000 per team
Best College Film = $1000 per team member not to exceed $5000 per team
People’s Choice Award for High School = $1000 per team member not to exceed $5000 per team
People’s Choice Award for College = $1000 per team member not to exceed $5000 per team
We will award up to $20,000 in prize money!!
