Celebrating Earth Day at Home

Apr 16 2020

This Earth Day is a big one – April 22nd, 2020 marks 50 years of celebrating our Earth, bringing awareness to the struggles it faces as well as the wonders it provides us. While we can’t celebrate together in person, there are plenty of opportunities to mark the occasion at home.

Join SCARCE for a virtual Earth Day celebration!

On Wednesday, April 22nd from 3-4pm we are hosting an interactive virtual Earth Day celebration via Zoom. We’ll be doing fun and illuminating Earth Day themed trivia and sharing our community-sourced Earth Day video.

Free, registration required.

Earth Day Community Video: Show us what Earth Day means to you

We’re making a video celebration for Earth Day and we need your help! Send us a drawing, photo, or short video (no more than 15 seconds) that shows what Earth Day means to you. Perhaps it’s enjoying a walk in your favorite park, the morning sun in your garden, or listening to the birds sing as you sit on your porch. Maybe it means caring for our resources by reusing or recycling or spreading awareness for the amazing things the Earth provides us. Perhaps it’s learning about fascinating new places or wildlife in a nature documentary (any Planet Earth fans out there?). Whatever it is, capture it in a photo, image or short video and we’ll use it to make a mash-up video to share online for Earth Day.

Send your contribution to [email protected] by Sunday, April 19th.

Earth Day Coloring Page
Show your neighbors that you’re celebrating Earth Day! Add your creative flair to our Earth Day coloring page and hang it in a window facing your street. You could even send it to Rose for your contribution to our Earth Day commuinty video! Download and print the coloring page below.

Catch up on episodes of Earth Chats

SCARCE’s podcast is in its second season and we’re doing a countdown to Earth Day – releasing a new episode each weekday this month through April 22nd. In each episode of Earth Chats we take on a different environmental topic in a casual and informative way so that you can feel empowered to do something about it. We talk everything from plastics to pollinators, conserving our soil and our night skies. Listen here on scarce.org, on Spotify, or in your favorite podcast app. While you’re at it, like and follow Earth Chats on Facebook or instagram.

Tune-in or host a virtual environmental documentary screening

Who doesn’t love a movie night? The One Earth Film Fest is hosting several virtual documentary screenings with follow-up discussions next week. Check out the line-up and register here.

You could host your own private screening your favorite environmental film using a video sharing app such as Kast, Netflix Party or on Zoom. A few viewing ideas: the documentary Reuse is available for free on YouTube. Night on Earth (from the folks behind Planet Earth II) is available on Netflix. Need kid-friendly ideas? Consider Disney’s WALL-E, The Lorax, or Fern Gully. Most are available for rental online. You can also tune in to the showings from the One Earth Film Fest’s Young Filmmakers Contest. Follow up your movie with a discussion asking each person what they got out of the film and brainstorming ways we can take action.
