Dunkin’ Donuts Pledges to Eliminate Foam Cups

Dunkin Donuts announced a pledge to eliminate foam cups from it’s global supply chain by 2020. Foam cups will be replaced by a double-walled paper cup certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard. While a single use cup of any kind isn’t good for the environment, the move will eliminate 1 billion foam cups from the waste stream annually. While neither paper cups nor foam cups are widely recyclable, paper cups will eventually decompose and are less toxic. Perhaps this will lead Dunkin’ Donuts down the slippery green slope to a compostable option (or so this writer hopes). This announcement follows McDonald’s first strict deadline to remove polystyrene foam from all of their packaging worldwide by 2019.
