Upcycled Craft: Weaving with Plastic Bags on a Pizza Box Loom

Thank you to former SCARCE team member Jane Hiller for sharing this craft!

You can use plastic bags to make “plarn” aka plastic bag yarn, which can then be used for knitting, crocheting, or, in this case, weaving on a DIY loom. This craft is great for kids from kindergarten up to middle school. An adult may need to help make the pizza box loom as it does use nails (but no hammer necessary).

Finished projects can be used as sit-upons, or multiple mats can be used to make a bag, pillow or napping pad.

This craft is great to pair with the book One Plastic Bag: Isatou Cessay and the Recycling Women of Gambia by Miranda Paul.

Want to do more about plastic bag waste? Your school can join the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge! It begins each year on America Recycles Day, November 15th and winners are announced on Earth Day. Winning schools receive a composite bench, made from recycled plastics including plastic bags.
