For a limited-time public tours are available of the latest engineering marvels being completed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD).  Tours are free and open to all ages but registration is required.

MWRD will provide tours of the Mainstream Pumping Station and then bus visitors to the McCook Reservoir, the last and largest of three reservoirs being constructed to protect area waterways from pollution and mitigate flooding. When completed, the reservoir will be the largest of it’s kind in the world, with a capacity of 10 billion gallons of stormwater. The reservoir will provide flood relief to 3.1 million people in Chicago and 36 surrounding communities.

The reservoir and pumping station are the latest features of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), the country’s largest public works project for pollution and flood control. It covers a 375-mile area including Chicago and 51 suburbs.
