This year it is all about water at SCARCE’s STEM-CON activity booth. Stop by to learn about sources of water pollution and how to prevent and reduce our negative impact on water quality through fun, hands-on activities.
Small acts can lead to major consequences for the quality of our water. In these hands-on, problem-solving activities participants will learn how our daily actions can contribute to water pollution and how it impairs environmental quality. Youwill engage with the watershed model by applying”contaminants” to various elements of the landscape (streets, farms, roofs, yards, etc.) and witness what happens to these pollutants over time, especially during rain events. This is especially relevant given the recent and growing flooding problems in DuPage County. You will also discover the challenges of pollution remediation by experimenting with cleaning up an oil spill. Finally participants will explore strategies for pollution prevention that can be applied in our daily actions to ensure improved water quality for the future. Information about appropriate disposal of water pollutants such as hazardous waste, medications, and cooking oil will be available along with other simple waste reduction practices.
SCARCE has partnered with the College of DuPage Environmental Club to host this booth.
