Arbor Day

April 28, 2023

Arbor Day has been celebrated each year on the last Friday in April for almost 150 years. Trees are vital resources, as the Arbor Day Foundation tells us:

Trees clean air and water, slow climate change, ease poverty and hunger, prevent species loss, and feed the human soul. All we need to do is plant and care for them. Let’s work together to make it happen around the world.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million trees were planted on the first Arbor Day in April 1872.

Celebrate

The Arbor Day Foundation wants to help you celebrate. They have a clock counting down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds to this year’s celebration. Learn about the history, get inspiration for your celebrationdownload materials, and find educational materials to use in the classroom sorted by course subject.

The Billion Tree Campaign

The United Nations began the Billion Tree Campaign in 2006 with to fight climate change by encouraging people to plant one tree for every person on the planet (7 billion at the time). It was met with huge success! By 2009, 7 billion trees were planted. Their new goal is to get people to collectively plant 1 billion trees each year, worldwide. To date, over 14 billion trees have been planted globally. You can join the Billion Tree Campaign and register your tree planting online.

SCARCE Classroom Activity: Natural Resource Globe

If you teach in a younger classroom, you can borrow SCARCE’s Natural Resource Globe for trees. It comes filled with many hands-on examples that allow students to see & feel the resources that trees provide us.

The Natural Resource Globe can be modified to specifically showcase resources from trees.

The Morton Arboretum: Celebrating Arbor Day

The Morton Arboretum has a page dedicated to celebrating Arbor Day in your community. You can get free tree tags to educate your students and the community about all the benefits trees provide us. They also have an entire resource page dedicated to Arbor Day in the Classroom.
